On 31 March, Department of Psychiatry and Department of Dermatology, Venereology and Leprosy, Shri Ram Murti Smarak Institute of Medical Sciences, Bareilly, Rohilkhand Dermatological Society, Bareilly, and Indian Psychiatry Society, Bareilly successfully organised a 1-day Continuing Medical Education(CME) session – Derma Psychiatry Conclave 2018– at Shri Ram Murti Smarak Institute of Medical Sciences, Bareilly.

The CME programme witnessed participation from more than 100 delegates from the states of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Participants included Dermatology and Psychiatry post-graduate residents from a large number of medical colleges. There were Guest Speakers from Dr. Gupta’s Skin and Hair Hospital(Lucknow), Base Hospital (Lucknow), Hind Institute of Medical Sciences(Barabanki), Base Hospital (Delhi), Rohilkhand Medical College & Hospital(Bareilly), and Shri Ram MurtiSmarak Institute of Medical Sciences(Bareilly).

For the first time such a CME programme was organized in the field of Psychodermatology or Psychocutaneous medicine. Looking at the interaction between mind, brain, and skin, Psychiatry focuses on the “internal invisible disease” and Dermatology focuses on the “external visible disease”. As a discipline, Psychodermatology encourages comprehensive and humanistic approaches to the management of dermatology patients with psychiatric comorbidity. The purpose of this CME programme was to provide clinicians a background using a biopsychosocial model for clinical assessment and management of psychosomatic aspects of dermatological disorders.

The faculty included Dr. Sarvesh Chandra (Senior Psychiatrist), Dr. D. Bhattacharya (Professor and Head, Base Hospital, Delhi), Dr. C.S. Sharma (Professor and Head, Rohilkhand Medical College & Hospital, Bareilly), Dr. Rajesh Verma (Professor and Head, Base Hospital, Lucknow), Dr. Sumit Gupta (Dr. Gupta’s Skin and Hair Hospital, Lucknow), Dr. Sunil Gupta (Professor and Head, Hind Institute of Medical Sciences, Barabanki), and Dr. Sujata Singh (Professor and Head, Shri Ram Murti Smarak Institute of Medical Sciences, Bareilly). They were supported by Dr. Madhur Kant Rastogi (Assistant Professor, Shri Ram Murti Smarak Institute of Medical Sciences, Bareilly and Organising Secretary, Derma Psychiatry Conclave 2018) and Dr. P.K. Pardal, Dr. Pratik Gahalaut, and Dr Nitin Mishra from Shri Ram Murti Smarak Institute of Medical Sciences, Bareilly.

Based on the appreciation and feedback from the attending delegates, the CME could serve its purpose of providing a robust platform for understanding, discussing, and learning about new and developing areas of knowledge and expertise.
