Students pursuing B. Tech. in Electrical and Electronics streams at Shri Ram Murti Smarak College of Engineering & Technology (SRMS CET) and Shri Ram Murti Smarak College of Engineering, Technology & Research (SRMS CETR), Bareilly recently acquired first-hand knowledge of the functioning of a nuclear power plant. The industrial visit, organized on 18 September, took them to Narora Power Plant, a well-known facility in the country. In all, 55 students from both the colleges got the rare opportunity to observe various processes of the power plant guided by experts in the field.

Narora Atomic Power Station (NAPS) is based in Narora in Bulandshahr district of Uttar Pradesh. The plant houses two reactors, each a pressurized heavy-water reactor (PHWR) capable of producing 220 MW of electricity. With faculty members guiding them, students embarked on the journey to understand the latest in power generation technology.

Students got an overview of the plant from Mr. Kanchhi of NAPS, who also spoke about different processes that form an integral part of the plant. Experienced Scientific Officers then took the students through safety procedures involved in different units. Inspired by the experience, students were keen to know more about the methods used to generate power and also to save electricity.

It was engaging for students to observe practical applications of concepts learnt in the classroom. They heartily participated in an interactive question and answer session with NAPS professionals to clear their doubts. Students went back from the visit knowing more about nuclear power, a field in which several of them wish to gain professional expertise. A day well-spent in learning and laying the foundation for future careers.
