SRMSIMS Microbiology Department

DEPARTMENT OF MICROBIOLOGY

The Department consists of a highly developed entry restricted Bacteriology, Mycobacteriology lab fitted with A.C & (BSL III, HEPA filter, MGIT 960 cool centrifuge) Mycology lab, Serological, Virology, Immunology & Parasitology lab. The daily workload of the department consists of around 70-80 Bacteriological cultures,35 T.B. culture& AFB Staining, 300 clinical virological investigations, 70 Serological, about 50 Parasitology & 35 Immunological, 15 Mycological investigations/day round the clock.

  • The Department boasts of automated equipment like BACTEC Blood culture, VITEK Automation culture & sensitivity with MIC determinate, MGIT 960 for TB liquid culture & sensitivity & Fluorescent Microscopy apart from all conventional techniques of a standard Mycobacteriological lab.
  • Sophisticated Immunological tests like Pro-calcitonin estimate for severe septic shock patient, Serum IgE testing for Atopypatients, Hepatitis ‘e’ antigen detection for acute viral replication& Infectivity detection & Anti core antibody detection for chronic Hepatitis ‘B’ patients apart from all ELISA tests forHep B, HepC, HIV, Dengue patients are being done.
  • At the molecular level, diagnosis of TB, Malaria, Dengue, HPV, Fungal detection in corneal ulcer & keratitis cases, BAL fluid are being performed.Plans for the future include Gene X-pert for detection of resistant Mycobacterium and RT PCR based diagnosis for Hepatitis, HIV, Dengue, Swine flu, Chikungunya virus etc.
