The kidney&#8217;s main function is to filter and eliminate waste, minerals, and fluid from the bloodstream through urine production.\u00a0<\/p><p><strong>Who Needs A Kidney Transplant?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><p>A kidney transplant is needed when the kidneys lose their ability to filter, harmful quantities of fluid and waste build up in the body, raising\u00a0blood pressure\u00a0(losing 90% of their ability to function normally)\u00a0and ultimately\u00a0leading to\u00a0renal failure\u00a0(end-stage kidney disease).\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>A\u00a0kidney transplantation is linked to:\u00a0<\/p><ul><li>A higher standard of living\u00a0<\/li><li>Death risk is reduced\u00a0<\/li><li>There are fewer dietary limitations<\/li><li>Reduced treatment costs\u00a0<\/li><\/ul><p><strong>What Are The Different Types Of Kidney Transplants?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><p>1.Deceased-donor kidney transplant\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>A deceased-donor kidney transplant is conducted when a kidney from a recently deceased donor is removed with the family&#8217;s permission or from a donor card and put into a recipient whose kidneys have failed and no longer work\u00a0properly.\u00a0The kidney is stored on ice or linked to a machine that delivers oxygen and nourishment until it is transplanted into the recipient. To decrease the amount of time the kidney spends outside of a human body, the donor and receiver are usually in the same geographic location as the transplant\u00a0center.\u00a0<\/p><p>2.Living-donor kidney transplant\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>A living-donor kidney transplant is when a living donor&#8217;s kidney is removed and transplanted into a recipient whose kidneys have failed.\u00a0Living-donor kidney transplant is an alternative to deceased-donor kidney transplant since only one given kidney is required to replace two failing kidneys.\u00a0<\/p><p>3.Preemptive kidney transplant\u00a0<\/p><p>A preemptive kidney transplant is performed before\u00a0the\u00a0kidney function deteriorates. Dialysis is required to replace the kidneys&#8217; usual filtering function.\u00a0The preferred treatment for end-stage renal disease is a preemptive kidney transplant.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p><strong>How Is A Kidney Transplant Performed?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><p>The\u00a0patient\u00a0will not\u00a0be conscious throughout\u00a0the\u00a0kidney transplant because it&#8217;s done under\u00a0general\u00a0anesthesia.\u00a0The\u00a0<wbr \/>heart rate, blood pressure, and blood oxygen level are monitored by the surgical team\u00a0throughout the procedure.\u00a0<\/p><p>The new kidney is implanted into\u00a0the\u00a0body through\u00a0a\u00a0surgical incision in the bottom half of one side of\u00a0the\u00a0abdomen.
