The Department of Pediatrics, enthusiastically celebrated the ‘World Breastfeeding Week-2018’ from 1st – 7th August 2018. The theme given by the WHO this year was “Breastfeeding: Foundation of life, Nourishment for Life” and by the IAP was “Breastfeeding: For Healthy Mothers and Happy Babies”.
Educational banners and danglers were placed at several places in the entire hospital and also at the urban and rural health centers. Educational pamphlets were distributed amongst general public and pregnant females in large, as also in the OPD. Patient queries regarding the issue were solved and they were educated more on the subject by experts.
A “Scientific Essay Writing” contest on the theme was held on 2.08.2018, in which postgraduate students from the Departments of Community Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Pediatrics participated. Contest was judged by Prof Piyush Kumar and Prof Rahul Goyal. Dr Shweta Tiwari and Dr Anshika Arora bagged the first and the second slots respectively.
A “Collage making” competition on the theme was also held on 3.08.2018, in which nursing students from the SRMS College of Nursing participated with great enthusiasm. Contest was judged by Prof Lalit Singh and Prof Jasvinder Singh. Winners were the team of Shivangi Sharma, Soniya Biswas and Tanuja Ray. The winners and the runners-up were awarded.
Dr Reetika Dawra educated the general public on the issue in the urban health training centre (UHTC) and Dr Siddhartha Narayan in the rural health training centre (RHTC).
Skit presentation was done in the OPD porch, by the pediatric PG residents. It was graced by the presence of Chairman Sir who applauded the team work and stressed on the importance of breastfeeding, and specially the utility of expressed breast milk in working mothers. Dr Sahil Goel and Dr Lahar Sahay were adjudged as the best and second best performers. After the welcome address by Prof Anita Kumari, Principal, Prof SB Gupta blessed the gathering. Dr Surabhi Chandra presented the weekly bulletin. Prizes and certificates were distributed by Chairman sir, Principal, Prof SB Gupta Sir, Dean PG, Prof Piyush Kumar sir and Prof Anita Kumari.
Last day of the celebrations was marked by a lecture to the final year MBBS students (Batch 2014) on “Breastfeeding and its importance”.
This year earmarked the online educational campaign of SRMS IMS. It was by means of utilizing social media in spreading the message and promotion of breastfeeding through educational videos online, thus continuing celebrations even beyond the week.
