At Shri Ram Murti Smarak Institute of Medical Sciences (SRMS IMS), Bareilly , excellence in medical care is not just an aspiration but a daily reality. This commitment to world-class medical & patient care was exemplified by DR HARSHIT AGARWAL , an Emergency & Trauma surgeon at SRMS IMS , who recently faced one of the most challenging cases of his career.
A young male, gravely injured by a firearm, was rushed to SRMS Hospital in a state of profound shock, with the bullet having caused significant trauma to the right side of his chest. His condition was critical & the clock was ticking.
Dr Harshit immediately initiated a bedside ultrasound (USG FAST), which revealed free fluid inpericardial cavity—a clear indication of suspected cardiac injury. Recognizing the urgency, Dr Harshit & his dedicated team prepared for an emergency thoracotomy. Within an hour of the patient’s arrival, SRMS Medico made the decisive call to operate. During the thoracotomy, team discovered severe injury to the right ventricle, wherein he meticulously repaired it on a beating heart, which is an extraordinary feat of surgical skill &precision.
Dr Harshit shares, “Such injuries are difficult to diagnose & have a very high mortality rate of about 60-70% even at the highest centers. The case was ably managed with a wonderful team approach by a team of anesthetist , cardiologist along with an enormous support from transfusion medicine & saw successful outcome.”
Thanks to the swift & decisive actions of doctors at SRMS Hospital, the patient’s life was saved. Remarkably, the patient’s recovery was rapid & was discharged just seven days later.
