HYPERTHERMIC INTRA-PERITONEAL CHEMOTHERAPY (HIPEC)

An advanced & targeted Chemotherapy during surgery

HIPEC is a newer modality of treating cancer patients with peritoneal involvement, for example advance ovarian CA, stomach CA, pancreatic malignancy, rectal CA etc. In this, we directly deliver higher doses of heated (41 to 42°C) chemotherapy to peritoneum after cytoreductive surgery, thereby bypassing systematic circulation of cytotoxic drugs and hence reducing its systematic side-effects and improving the effectiveness of chemotherapy. This is the one time management including surgery plus chemotherapy.

Advantages

  1. Better results as compared to standard systematic chemotherapy in terms of
    • Less recurrence rate • Improved survival • Better tolerability
  2. Minimum side-effects – No hair loss, No GI upset, No anemia
  3. Single visit treatment, No multiple admissions to hospital for cycles of systematic chemotherapy, Cutting cost of repeated admissions, drugs and blood tests.
