TAPPING INTO TRADITION: WHEN ENGINEERING MET KATHAK AT SRMS COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING & TECHNOLOGY

With each beat, they learned the power of grace; with each spin, they celebrated heritage
Who says engineers can’t groove to tradition? At SRMS College of Engineering & Technology (CET), Bareilly, gears paused and ghungroos took over!
In a one-of-a-kind Summer Kathak Workshop, about 30 students from SRMS Trust Institutions laced up not just their shoes—but their cultural roots. Under the soulful guidance of Dr Prerna Rana, an acclaimed Kathak artist and scholar, and a guest faculty at Bhatkhande Sanskriti Vishwavidyalaya, Lucknow, students explored the art of storytelling through rhythm, expression, and movement.Organized by SRMS Trust in collaboration with Birju Maharaj Kathak Sansthan, Lucknow (Department of Culture, UP), the week-long workshop was more than just dance—it was a deep dive into India’s classical soul.
Dr Prerna Rana, a gold medalist and PhD in dance from Banaras Hindu University (BHU), brought the charm of Lucknow Gharana alive—carrying forward the legacy of her guru, Padma Shri Dr Kumkum Dhar, one of India’s finest Kathak exponents. Well, this wasn’t just a workshop; it was a reminder that technical minds thrive when creativity flows.
Earlier, the workshop was inaugurated by Dr Prabhakar Gupta, Principal CET & Dr Prerna Ranain the presence of Dr Ritu Singh, Vice Principal, CET; Dr Anuj Kumar, Director, TDP Cell; Dr Shailesh Saxena, Dean Academics, CETR; Dr Saurabh Gupta, DSW & several others.
