During the ongoing 6-day long grand theatre festival ‘INDRADHANUSH—RANG MAHOTSAV 2022’ conducted by and at Riddhima—A Centre of Performing and Fine Arts, affiliated to Indira Kala Sangit Vishwavidyalaya, Khairagarh (Chhattisgarh), the fourth play being showcased on November 04, 2022 is ‘Akbar The Great…Nahi Rahe’ (Hindi Comedy), which is written by Mrinal Mathur, a regular contributor of much-needed original plays to Indian theatre, and directed by Dr M Sayeed Alam, known for his penchant for humor and history, who exhibited as ‘Akbar’.
A presentation by Pierrot’s Troupe, New Delhi, this play is full of every comic shade—be it spoof, mimicry, satire and farce. The play quintessentially highlights what happens when Akbar’s greatness is questioned in today’s times. The comic take on Akbar’s greatness shall introduce the viewers to a ‘special area’ in heaven—Lutyen’s swarg that’s meant for kings and emperors who call them ‘The Great’. The play further discovers how people no longer give that title to Akbar, and in return, he sets out to reclaim his identity and redeem his name. During this process, he finds several allies in heaven, and thereafter starts a roller coaster of dramatic comedy. The play wonderfully portrays the humor on how Akbar finds support in heaven from Ashoka to Alexander to Atal Bihari Vajpayee, but he looks to redeem himself through someone from Earth!
The play features some of the prominent actors of the country, including Sumit Bhardwaj, Bhumi N Siraj, M Sayeed Alam, having a theatrical experience spanning over more than 1000 shows, 25 plays and 10 years.
