WORLD BREASTFEEDING WEEK at SRMS INSTITUTE OF MEDICAL SCIENCES: BUILDING A HEALTHIER START, TOGETHER
From August 1–7, SRMS Institute of Medical Sciences (SRMS-IMS), Bareilly observed World Breastfeeding Week through a week-long programme spanning the hospital, communities and classrooms.
Organised by Department of Community Medicine in collaboration with Department of Paediatrics, the programme included:
- Breastfeeding counselling on early initiation, colostrum, correct positioning, institutional delivery and common myths
- Health camp benefiting 119+ people at the UHTC field-practice area
- Community awareness under the Family Adoption Programme at Attapatti Januvi, Attapatti Sumali and Bhairpura
- “Myths & Facts about Breastfeeding” session through the Telemedicine Bus at Faridpur
- Quiz for nursing staff on evidence-based counselling
- Role-play by nursing students on effective communication with mothers and families
- Poster competition with 95 MBBS students of the 2023 batch, across 19 teams
Komal Kumari, Shreya, Akriti, Dange Shivprasad and Tanishque Raj Gupta were felicitated as the winning students by Dr MS Butola, Principal, IMS; Dr Bindu Garg, Dean UG; Dr Vandana Negi, Professor & Head, Paediatrics; and Dr Saiyara Bano, Associate Professor, Physiology.
Coordinated by Dr Deepak Kumar, Professor and Faculty In-charge, Department of Community Medicine, the programme reinforced one powerful message: breastfeeding is not a mother’s responsibility alone, it needs collective support from families, healthcare systems and communities. However, the week concluded with SRMS IMS reaffirming its commitment to evidence-based counselling, community awareness, nursing education and public health initiatives for healthier mothers and children.
