It can be used to improve sight, relieve pain and treat severe infection or damage. One of the most common reasons for a cornea transplant is a condition called keratoconus, which causes the cornea to change shape.

Cornea donations :
The cornea used in a transplant is removed from the healthy eye of a person who has died and donated their cornea. Corneas are rigorously checked for disease and infection before being transplanted.

When it is needed :
Cornea transplants are usually performed to correct problems with your eyesight caused by certain medical conditions. They’re also sometimes used to relieve pain in a damaged or diseased eye or to treat emergencies such as severe infection or damage. Read More…..

A LEADER IN CATARACT

Cataract is commonly an aging process & so understandably affects almost everyone in each of the two eyes. In developing & emerging countries like ours, it has always been by far the biggest cause of blindness. However, the Department of Ophthalmology at SRMS is the leader in the region for the largest number of Cataract surgeries performed as well as the implantation of the most advanced and premium intraocular lenses. The department has performed several thousands of cataract surgeries over the years & contributed majorly to blindness eradication. The state-of-art Phacoemulsification surgeries for Cataract are done under topical anesthesia, popularly known as ‘no needle cataract surgery’, where the patient goes home within 2 hours of operation. High volume free of cost cataract surgeries are done under DBCS scheme. Implantation of extended depth of focus, trifocal, multifocal and toric Intra Ocular Lenses (IOLs) and implantable contact lenses offering the patient youthful and spectacle free vision, is a well-known highlight of the department. The IOL Master offers the most accurate preoperative calculation of IOL power. Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is an advanced diagnostic imaging technology used in the department for diagnosis and follow up of retinal, optic nerve and anterior segment eye disease. The fundus digital camera allows retinal photography and angiography to be done. The Humphrey field analyzer (HVF) offers static perimetry analysis for glaucoma and neurological disorders.

THE ONE & ONLY ‘EYE BANK’ IN THE REGION

The Department OF Ophthalmology also runs the one and only SRMS Eye Bank in this region, equipped with a specular microscope and functioning 24*7. Founded in the year 2002, SRMS Eye Bank is an institutional life member of the Eye Bank Association of India, and is HOTA licensed by government agencies.
