The Department of Pediatrics at Shri Ram Murti Smarak (SRMS) Hospital offers the best in child health care, providing an advanced level of care—both medical and surgical—in a child-friendly environment. SRMS is renowned for excellence in the diagnosis, management, and treatment of children of all ages—from newborns to adolescents. We set the benchmark for handling extremely premature babies and successfully treating the rarest diseases in children. We understand that each child is unique, and hence we offer a customized treatment considering their milestones—developmental, cognitive, communication, and emotional or social.
Providing Tender Care
The Department of Pediatric Care at SRMS Hospital comprises of a highly experienced team of pediatricians and surgeons that offer the best out-patient, in-patient and intensive care services, with safety and comfort. It offers expert intensivists and trained nurses in respective sub-specialties, to ensure compassionate care and speedy recovery of the patient. The doctors provide expert counseling and consultations to the patients/child’s family members, and are also skilled in treating a wide variety of pediatric diseases and illnesses related to all organ systems of the body. The team also focuses on complete care and special needs of the newborns. The pediatricians also make sure to educate and counsel the patient attendants, and focuses on providing tender care to the children and treat them with great compassion. There is also a small play area in the IPD complex, provided for pediatric patients to keep the sick children engaged and happy.
The Department also provides a well-equipped Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), which is manned round-the-clock by our experienced specialists and highly trained nurses, for the treatment of the critically ill or injured child.
The OPD Complex of Pediatric Department is situated on 4th Floor of New Building. OPD services are being provided from Monday to Saturday from 9AM to 2PM. Pediatric Surgery consultation and immunization services are also available on all working days. All the vaccines of National Immunization Program are being give free of cost, along with paid vaccines. Optional vaccines are also given in consultation with parents. The OPD Complex areas also has facility for blood sampling of patients on OPD basis. The OPD complex also has a creche area for small children and lactating mothers.
The Department of Pediatrics boasts of a new, fully equipped, state-of-the-art infrastructure with world-class facilities having 85 bedded wards dedicated to pediatric patients, aged Day 1 to 18 years. We have 18 bedded PICU and 20 bedded NICU, where critically ill children of all disciplines are treated, including trauma & surgery patients. Besides, we have general ward, immunocompromised ward and isolation wards for communicable diseases. Our ICUs are fully equipped with the latest equipment’s, including ventilators, CPAP, BiPAP and HHHFNC machines, warmers, LED phototherapy units, infusion pumps and monitors. We have 12 ventilators and many HFNC and CPAP machines. We have multipara monitors and infusion pumps on each bed. Besides, phototherapy units, transport incubator and other facilities are available at affordable prices. All procedures including intubation, central line insertion, exchange transfusions, surfactant instillation, intercostal drainage, pleural and pericardial tap, peritoneal dialysis etc are also performed routinely.
The Pediatrics department also has a separate upcoming area dedicated to children with cancer. It has a fully equipped procedure room with separate lab facilities for bedside investigative procedures. A separate play room area for our admitted patients and a room for duty doctors adds to the departments motto of being dedicated to care—both to our patients and their treating doctors.
SRMS Institute of Medical Sciences (SRMS IMS) is a pioneer institute in medical education. The Pediatrics department provides educational experience in the diversified field of pediatrics in an intellectual environment conducive to learning the exemplary practice of pediatrics. The Department of Pediatrics trains 150 MBBS and 6 postgraduate students every year encompassing Neonatology, Adolescent Medicine, Pediatric Neurology, Cardiology, Hematology, Nephrology, Intensive Care etc. All seats are NMC recognized. Our residents are trained in all facets of health care, including preventive, therapeutic and rehabilitation services. They are also trained in basic and advanced life support, as well as neonatal resuscitation, and imparts the best clinical care in an empathetic manner. They are well versed in carrying routine practical procedures skillfully, which gives them an edge over their other colleagues when they begin their career after post-graduation that has been testified by several alumni of the department. They are also trained in medical research as they regularly do their thesis and non-thesis research in the form of paper and poster presentations. Our residents have also been the proud winners in several competitions including quiz competitions at national and state levels. We regularly organize conferences, CMEs, workshops and also celebrate national and international health days and weeks to spread awareness.
We train our residents in all skilled procedures like, lumbar puncture, central line insertion, PICC line, umbilical line insertion, exchange transfusion, endotracheal intubation, peritoneal dialysis, surfactant instillation and intercostal drainage etc. All these procedures are explained and demonstrated in well- equipped skill lab in the college as well. The ward area of the pediatrics department also has an in-built Case Demonstration Room for teaching UG and PG students, which fulfills our commitment and responsibility of teaching and mentoring the doctors of tomorrow.
The department strives to have an appropriate balance between structured educational activities for UG and PG students. We are also accredited center for imparting BLS-CPR training by IAP. Besides managing patients in casualty, the residents also learn to manage patients in OPD, where they become specifically skilled in anthropometry, vaccination, nutritional counseling and communication skills. The residents are also motivated to do research activities under the supervision of their guides and mentors, and come out with innovations in the field. The Pediatrics department also hosts many academic and extra-curricular events as a part of routine activities including celebration of the WHO World Health Days like Immunization week, Breast feeding Week, IAP UG and PG Quiz, Workshops, Conferences etc.

The Pediatric Units at SRMS Hospital has successfully performed many pediatric surgeries and procedures in varied specialties including Cochlear Implants, ECMO, Organ Transplantation, Pyloromyotomy to name a few.
