NOT EVERY HEART NEEDS OPEN-HEART SURGERY. SOME JUST NEED THE RIGHT TEAM: SRMS INSTITUTE OF MEDICAL SCIENCES BEAT THE ODDS WITHOUT OPEN-HEART SURGERY

At SRMS Institute of Medical Sciences (IMS), Bareilly advanced heart care is giving high-risk patients a safer second chance at life. Recently, two elderly patients (78 & 80 years) with severe aortic stenosis, both considered unfit for open-heart surgery, were successfully treated through TAVI (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation), a minimally invasive procedure that replaces the heart valve without opening the chest.

Successfully performed by our Interventional Cardiologists, Dr Amit Varshney & Dr Deepesh Agarwal, the TAVI has transformed care for elderly and high-risk patients by offering a safer, minimally invasive alternative with faster recovery and renewed hope.

Talking about the case, one patient arrived with severe breathlessness and chest pain. The other had undergone previous CABG with a reduced heart function (35% EF). Both procedures were successful, enabling faster recovery and an early discharge. In one case, the valve pressure gradient improved dramatically from 78 mmHg to just 5 mmHg, bringing immediate relief.

Adding another milestone, the Cardiac Team also successfully performed a simultaneous Carotid Artery Stenting (CAS) and Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty (PTCA) on a patient with recurrent mini-strokes (TIA), critical carotid artery blockage, and an acute heart attack, treating two life-threatening conditions in a single sitting.
