A recent visit (on April 6) by B Pharm students of SRMS College of Engineering & Technology (SRMS CET), Bareilly to the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI), Bareilly, proved to be a highly informative and valuable experience. IVRI is a world-class research organisation that focusses on the examination of animal welfare, health and disease. However, the students got a unique opportunity to witness first-hand the world of cattle research and the workings of various laboratories at IVRI, which motivated and promoted scientific thinking among students.

The educational as well as inspiring visit of students was accompanied by SMRS Professors, Dipali Gupta and Kumar Abhinav from the Department of Pharmacy, SRMS CET, Bareilly. At the beginning, a brief introduction was provided on the conduct of research as well as how important is its role in the creation of vaccines, diagnostic tools, and treatment regimens for animal diseases. Later, the students were given a tour of understanding of various facilities and laboratories at IVRI, including the Laboratory of Chemotherapy, Toxicology, Biopharmaceutics, Central Instrumental Facility (CIF) – Bioengineering, and Gene Expression. Thereafter, a knowledge-driven presentation was delivered by Dr C Madan Mohan, Senior Scientist at IVRI serving for 23 years. SRMS students interacted with experienced researchers and scientists at IVRI, and were apprised with glimpse of CIF laboratory that’s designed to provide information about complex methods and molecular biology instruments. This was followed by a trip to a museum, wherein the eye-catching sight of deer livestock was an alluring experience for the students.

However, the fun-filled visit to IVRI helped students gain insights into the world of cattle research & its process, institute’s vast capabilities in cattle research, the challenges faced by researchers, the strategies used to overcome them, and the role of pharmaceuticals in animal health.
