Industrial visit was organized by the TDP Cell of SRMS college of engineering & technology , Bareilly for students of Electrical and Electronics Engineering on 6th December 2021 to Chilla Hydro Power Station for 30 students of 3rd year along with two faculties, Ms. Sadaf Qasim and Mr. Rajesh Kumar, Assistant Professor, EN Department.

Visit started with a security rules briefing as per the latest COVID-19 guidelines. After reaching to Plant, students were given instruction by the security Incharge of power plant and they were instructed to wear helmets, masks, ID cards. He also explained about the important safety rules to comply with at all times. Students were than divided in a group of 10, a faculty and a Senior Engineer of power station accompanied students group and showed them various unit of plant and explained their working and significance.

About Chilla Hydroelectric Project:

The project is a run-of-river scheme constructed on river Ganga 5 km upstream of holy town Hardwar. Garhwal Rishikesh Chilla Scheme is one of the completed run of the river schemes. It utilises a drop of 33 metres from Virbhadra upto power house situated 4 km. upstream of Ganga Canal Headwork’s at Bhimgoda. The river discharge available at Virbhadra, has been diverted by constructing a barrage in to a 14.1 km., long power channel. After generating power the water is discharge in river Ganga a 1.2 km. long tail race channel. The discharge as available in river Ganga, upto 580cumecs (20,000 cusecs) has been utilised for generation of power.

Works on this scheme were started in Oct. 1974. The Chilla Power Project scheme consists of a 312 m long, 11.5 m high gated diversion barrage at Pashulok, about 4 km downstream of holy town Rishikesh. There are four generating units having vertical Kaplan turbines directly coupled with the synchronous generator and all the functional works were completed by Dec. 1980. All the four units of the power house were commissioned in March, 1981. The total cost of the scheme is 9776 lacs and it has added 742 million units annually. This generation would increase to 920 million units after completion of Tehri Project and is situated in District Pauri Garhwal of Uttarakhand State.

The Objectives of the Industrial Visit:

During the industrial visit, the students came to know about the salient features of the hydropower generation project. They took great interest in observing Water Conducting System, Design Discharge, Turbine Type & Output, Generator Type & Output, Main Transformer, etc. The students also learned about UJVN Ltd and its role in establishing, operating, and maintaining power generating stations in the State.

The project authorities gave ample time to see the different areas of the power project. The in-charges at different sections facilitated the visit cordially. One of the section in-charges also explained the hydropower energy scenario in the State. He also informed that the hydropower generated from the project is also distributed to neighboring States – Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh.

It gave a new perspective to students about the branch of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, and strengthened the concepts of Power Station Practices. We hope that this visit will help the students in future practical life and bring a positive change in their thinking and practical behavior regarding Education and specially Engineering.
