Department of Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Shri Ram Murti Smarak College of Engineering & Technology (SRMS CET), Bareilly recently organized a Faculty Development Program on ‘Recent Trends in Power Electronics and Power Systems’. Held over five days – from 11 to 15 July – the program was sponsored by Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Technical University, Lucknow. The program aimed to keep the faculty members abreast of the latest developments in the field. With presence of noted academicians, the FDP made its mark on the audience.
Er. Subhash Mehra, Trust Administrator; Professor Dr. Prabhakar Gupta, Dean – Academics, SRMS CET, Bareilly; Dr. Piyush Garg, FDP Coordinator; Professor Mohammad Mustaqeem, HOD – EN Department and all faculty members were present for the valedictory session that set the stage for the program. The inaugural session was held in the presence of Shri Dev Murti Ji, Honourable Chairman – SRMS Trust; Shri Aditya Murti Ji, Trust Secretary; Chief Guest for the occasion Dr. Vishal Kumar, IIT Roorkee; and Dr. Prabhakar Gupta, Dean – Academics, SRMS CET, Bareilly.
After the traditional inauguration and welcoming of guests, Professor Dr. Prabhakar Gupta and Professor Mohammed Mustaqeem outlined the objectives and abstract of the FDP for the benefit of all participants. Chief Guest Dr. Vishal Kumar then addressed the gathering and spoke about the importance and application of smart grid and green energy. Honourable Chairman, Shri Dev Murti Ji appreciated the organization of a program of such scale and magnitude that engaged faculty members in different activities to make them realize the advantages of green energy.
The FDP had a good mix of lectures and lab sessions over the course of five days to keep things relatable for participants. Dr. Vishal Kumar held a session on wide area management system. He highlighted the importance of Phase Measurement Unit (PMU), its operation monitoring and control. Discussing issues regarding PMU installation for power system protection and control, he rounded up the session with valuable information about distributed generator, which is crucial for the functioning of organizations in the field today.
Keeping up the momentum, Dr. Manoj Tripathi, Associate Professor, IIT Roorkee, offered an overview of power system protection and control, power quality, reliability security, and modern energy management system. He also introduced GSM Zignee based communication and, with the use of flow charts and software modelling, demonstrated the practical application of various concepts. Then Professor Rizwan Khan, Aligarh Muslim University, focused on the topical issue of Power Electronics. While his talk focused on types of converters and their working methodology, the lab session introduced Matlab Simulink to the participants. Later Dr. Sanjiv Kumar, Assistant Professor, Harcourt Butler Technical University, held an interactive session on the basics of Power Electronics, including the working of half wave and full wave – single and three phase rectifiers. He offered suitable examples and applications to ensure the audience connected with the session.
The last day of the FDP brought Dr. Lal Bahadur Prasad, Assistant Professor, Madan Mohan Malviya Engineering College, Gorakhpur, to the stage. From basics of Systems and Modelling to Automation Generation Control and a lab presentation on Matlab Simulink, his session had all the ingredients for comprehensive learning. At the end of each session, participants had the opportunity to ask questions and clarify their doubts. Overall the FDP offered an enriching learning experience for participants on the latest trends in their areas of interest.
